The FIC is the most important artistic and cultural event in Mexico and Latin America.
Since 1972, the year of its creation, it's home has been the city of Guanajuato. Founded in 1546 and declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, this paradigm of colonial architecture in the heart of Mexico was named American Capital Cervantes.
In it's origins and as a tribute to Don Miguel de Cervantes, the festival spread mainly all artistic creations in Spanish, and each year recalls the tradition of Guanajuato University Theatre. Currently, its programming is open to different paths and worldviews and contemporary conceptions of cultural work to become a space for meeting and exchange.
Besides occupying a special place among the four most important festivals of it's kind worldwide, the International Cervantes Festival is a member of the European Festivals Association and the Association of Performing Arts Festivals of Asia.
